iPhone 18 Pro max Projected to be Heaviest iPhone Yet, Prioritizing Features Over Slimness
Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max, slated for release in Fall 2026, is expected to be the heaviest iPhone model to date, weighing in at approximately 243 grams. This represents a 10-gram increase over the anticipated weight of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Despite maintaining the same 6.9-inch display size as current models, the device is projected to be slightly thicker.
This weight gain isn’t a result of material choices, but rather a deliberate design shift focused on enhanced functionality. Apple transitioned from titanium (used in the 221-gram iPhone 15 Pro max) to aluminum for the iPhone 17 Pro models, increasing the weight to 233 grams. The iPhone 18 Pro Max builds on this with further internal additions.
Sources indicate the primary driver of the increased weight is a larger battery, intended to significantly improve battery life. A new cooling system utilizing a stainless steel vapor chamber is also planned, alongside upgrades to the camera system. These camera improvements include a main sensor with a smaller aperture and a newly developed three-layer sensor, reportedly sourced from Samsung.Minor weight increases are also anticipated from adjustments to the Dynamic Island and Face ID technology.
This move signals a potential departure from Apple’s historical emphasis on creating increasingly thinner devices. Reports suggest Apple has determined that consumers are willing to accept a slightly heavier device in exchange for improved durability and advanced features, particularly within the Pro Max line, which is favored by users prioritizing performance and longevity.
If these projections hold true, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be the first iPhone to surpass 0.25 kilograms (250 grams).
