IOS 26: New Emojis Approved by Unicode Consortium

Unicode Consortium Approves Eight New Emojis for Unicode 17.0 Update

The Unicode Consortium, the non-profit organization responsible for maintaining the universal character encoding system, has officially approved a new set of eight emojis for inclusion in Unicode 17.0. This standardization ensures that text and emojis render consistently across all digital platforms and devices, with the Consortium, rather than individual tech companies like Apple or Google, making the final decisions on which emojis are added.

The newly approved emojis are:

  • Apple Core
  • Ballet Dancers
  • distorted Face
  • Fight Cloud
  • Hairy Creature
  • Orca
  • Trombone
  • Treasure Chest

While these emojis have been finalized, users may need to wait for subsequent software updates to see them implemented on their devices. Historically, companies like Apple design their own unique interpretations of new emojis, which typically appear several months after the unicode standard is updated. As an example, emojis from Unicode 16.0,finalized in September 2024,did not become available on iPhones until the release of iOS 18.4 in March of the following year. Therefore, although iOS 26 is anticipated soon, the integration of these eight new emojis is expected to follow a few months later.
