IOC Reaffirms Sport‘s Role in Promoting Peace Amidst Global Conflicts

President Coventry Expresses Concern and Hope
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kristin Coventry has voiced deep concern regarding the ongoing conflicts impacting communities worldwide. “Like everyone interested in peace for the region, we follow the current diplomatic developments very closely and hope that they can soon lead to a pathway to peace,” President Coventry stated. She extended the IOC’s heartfelt sympathy to all those affected and reaffirmed solidarity with the Olympic community in the region.
The Unifying Power of Sport
Coventry underscored the fundamental role of sport in fostering global unity through peaceful competition. The IOC recently reiterated this vital principle, emphasizing its importance now more than ever. “With so many wars and conflicts affecting millions of innocent people all around the world, sport has the ability to bring the whole world together in peaceful competition,” she explained.
A Model of coexistence: Paris 2024
The spirit of this unity was powerfully demonstrated at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where athletes from 206 National Olympic committees (NOCs), including the NOC of Palestine and the NOC of Israel, alongside the Refugee Olympic Team, shared a common space and purpose within the Olympic Village. This provided a tangible example of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
Supporting the Palestinian Sports Revival Plan
The IOC continues to actively support the ”Palestinian Sports Revival Plan,” initially presented by President Jibril Rajoub last year. The IOC has committed to coordinating an international effort to secure funding from various contributors,with the goal of rebuilding damaged sports facilities within the Palestinian territories and restoring sporting activities for the Palestinian NOC.
