Inter Miami Defeats NYCFC: Messi Scores in Thrilling MLS Matchup
Modern York City FC’s undefeated start to the Major League Soccer season ended Sunday with a 3-2 defeat to Inter Miami at Yankee Stadium, a result secured despite the absence of head coach Javier Mascherano, who was serving a one-match suspension.
Mascherano was ejected during Inter Miami’s previous MLS match against Charlotte, according to reports, forcing his assistant, Leandro Stillitano, to take the helm against New York City. Despite the setback, Inter Miami overcame an early deficit to claim three points.
Gonzalo Luján opened the scoring for Inter Miami, but Nicolás Fernández Mercau quickly equalized for the home side before halftime. Agustín Ojeda then put New York City ahead in the 59th minute, capitalizing on an assist from Maxi Moralez. Though, Lionel Messi leveled the score at 2-2 with a free kick, aided by a misjudgment from New York City goalkeeper Freese.
The winning goal arrived in the 74th minute when Micael headed home, completing the comeback for Inter Miami. The victory comes after Inter Miami’s elimination from the Concacaf Champions Cup by Nashville SC, a result Mascherano acknowledged as a disappointment.
“What happened is in the past; we can’t change it now, and there is no point in dwelling on it,” Mascherano said Saturday, according to ESPN. “Clearly, we are still in the process of coming to terms with, and processing, the disappointment caused by our elimination.” He emphasized the need to focus on the MLS season, stating, “The best way to demonstrate that is to now shift our focus entirely to the league.”
Mascherano had opted to start with a largely first-choice lineup, but notably benched forward Germán Berterame, who joined Inter Miami from Rayados de Monterrey for a reported $15 million. Berterame has yet to score for his new club.
Despite the Champions Cup exit, Mascherano expressed satisfaction with the team’s overall MLS form, noting a record of two wins, three draws, and one loss. “The only way to move forward is to maintain that belief in our process, keep working hard, strive to improve in every aspect and take full responsibility for our actions; I, ” he said.
Inter Miami’s next match is scheduled for March 29th against D.C. United.
