Instacart Acquires Arpalus to Enhance Grocery Shelf Intelligence
Instacart has acquired computer vision company Arpalus to integrate advanced shelf intelligence directly into its grocery fulfillment ecosystem. By deploying Arpalus’ technology—which achieves over 95% inventory accuracy via standard smartphone cameras—Instacart aims to bridge the data gap between physical store shelves and digital marketplace availability for its 600,000-shopper network.
Scaling Physical AI Across the Instacart Marketplace
The integration of Arpalus marks a strategic shift toward what Instacart Chief Connected Stores Officer David McIntosh describes as “Physical AI.” Instacart will leverage its existing workforce to perform real-time visual audits. According to the company’s July 16 press release, these shoppers visit large-format retail locations more than 15 times daily, creating a high-frequency data feedback loop.

This operational pivot addresses a friction point in omnichannel retail. By utilizing Arpalus’ computer vision, Instacart intends to feed cleaner data into its Storefront Pro and Store View platforms.
Consolidation as a Defensive Moat
This acquisition follows a pattern of vertical integration for Instacart. In April, the company acquired Colombia-based Instaleap to bolster marketplace integrations, and in May 2025, it acquired Wynshop to scale its eCommerce solutions for grocers and retailers. These moves signal a transition from a delivery service to a retail technology stack provider.
Operationalizing Shelf Intelligence
The deployment of Arpalus technology extends beyond the smartphone app. Instacart plans to embed these computer vision capabilities into its Caper Carts—shopping trolleys equipped with external cameras. These carts move through store aisles to provide a map of inventory levels.
The Future of Intelligent Retail
Arpalus Founder and CEO Ofir Zilberberg frames the acquisition as a transformative milestone for the sector. By merging specialized AI innovation with Instacart’s scale and retail reach, the partnership aims to redefine store operations. For the broader market, this development underscores a broader trend: the convergence of physical store operations and digital analytics.
