Inside Milk + Honey Spa: The Cleopatra-Inspired Wellness Routine Fit for a Queen
Milk + honey founder Alissa Bayer looked to ancient Egyptian queen Cleopatra when shaping the wellness destination’s concept and expansive menu, drawing inspiration from legends of milk and honey baths to build a U.S. spa brand that has expanded locations since 2006 with offerings ranging from massages to medSPA services.
The historical nod forms the backbone of a business model that treats self-care as an essential, elevated, deeply caring experience. Bayer tells Entertainment Tonight that she wanted to establish an elevated space because she could not find that specific caliber of deeply caring environment elsewhere on the market.
“I was inspired by the legends of Cleopatra bathing in milk and honey, ingredients long associated with beauty, from the lactic acid in milk to the humectant qualities of honey,” Bayer tells ET. That royal treatment carries through to every visit, spanning massages, facials, hair, nails, and medSPA treatments designed to help clients feel grounded, confident, and connected.
The Ordered Approach to Head-to-Toe Self-Care
Bayer outlines a specific structural order for clients seeking a full head-to-toe transformation that leaves them fully refreshed.
The sequence begins with a manicure or pedicure to incorporate a hand or foot massage. From there, clients transition to a massage featuring body gua sha, followed directly by a lymphatic sculpting facial. Bayer emphasizes the logic behind this specific ordering.
“I always recommend having the massage before the facial, so you are not lying face down afterward with freshly treated skin,” Bayer explains. The routine concludes with a blowout so clients leave feeling entirely cared for and ready to reenter the world.
For an extra dose of indulgence, a body wrap provides a cocoon-like finish. Bayer notes that exfoliating, treating, and wrapping the body in warmth while combining it with massage engages all the senses, allowing for a deep surrender that is difficult to describe prior to experiencing it.
Embracing the Shift from Anti-Aging to Pro-Aging
Beyond treatment sequencing, the brand’s guiding philosophy steers away from traditional attempts to reverse time, leaning instead into an ethos that celebrates every stage of life. Bayer points to her own gray hair as a tangible example of this cultural shift.
“I am loving the shift from anti-aging to pro-aging. For me, that has meant embracing my gray hair rather than feeling like I need to cover it. I still want to care for myself and feel good, but I am less interested in trying to erase every sign of age. There is something beautiful about allowing yourself to evolve and feeling confident in the person you are becoming,” she states.
Looking ahead at the trajectory of the wellness sector, Bayer anticipates that future treatments will lean further into personalization. She projects that self-care regimens will increasingly design around specific transitions in skin, hair, hormones, sleep, and the nervous system, reinforcing the idea that beauty exists in every season of life.
