Huskies’ Injured Players Honored in Uniform for UC Davis Game
SEATTLE – Despite being sidelined with injuries, several high-profile University of Washington football players were fully dressed in uniform and participated in pre-game preparations for the Huskies’ September 7th victory over UC Davis. Head coach Jedd Fisch confirmed the gesture was a intentional effort to maintain team involvement and morale for those unable to play.
The symbolic inclusion of injured players – including those facing season-ending setbacks – underscores the program’s commitment to fostering a cohesive team habitat even amidst adversity. While unable to participate on the field, these athletes were encouraged by the coaching staff to remain engaged with the game-day routine, offering a sense of belonging and continued contribution. The move comes as Washington prepares for a challenging schedule and aims to build a championship culture.
Fisch explained the team allowed the injured players to wear pads and jerseys, but intentionally withheld helmets. “These guys want to wear their pads, they want to be dressed and ready to go for a game — we don’t give them their helmets,” Fisch said.”But they do get the chance to be part of the team.”
The players honored included Zaydrius rainey-Sale, who was pictured during a recruiting visit, and others whose specific injuries were not disclosed. The gesture provided a visible demonstration of support and recognition for their dedication, despite their inability to compete.
