Indonesia to Revitalize 71,744 Schools by 2026
The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture has set a target to revitalize 71,744 educational units by 2026, supported by a budget of Rp 14 trillion.
Minister of Education and Culture Abdul Mu’ti stated that the initiative follows a direct directive from President Prabowo Subianto to accelerate the equalization of education quality across the country. The current target includes an addition of approximately 60,000 educational units. “The President has mentioned it several times, so by 2026, the revitalization program can target 71,744 educational units,” Mu’ti said.
Financial disbursements for the program have already commenced, with the government reporting that the realization of school revitalization has reached Rp 2.6 trillion. The government has disbursed US$150 million specifically designated for school upgrades and a digital push.
Implementation for the 2026 cycle is underway, with agreements finalized for 4,838 educational units. To date, funds have been disbursed to 3,408 of those units. Several projects have already moved into the initial stages of development.
Prioritization of Disaster-Hit and Remote Regions
The government has established specific priorities for the allocation of resources. High priority is given to schools that sustained damage due to disasters, with a particular focus on regions in Sumatra and other affected areas across Indonesia.
Beyond disaster zones, the ministry is prioritizing schools located in underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions. The program too targets schools with severe damage that fall outside the 3T or disaster-hit classifications.
As part of these regional efforts, the government is focusing on the revitalization of schools in East Nusa Tenggara. Minister Mu’ti has been actively seeking input on the current state of education within the province to inform the program’s execution.
