A school building collapse in Kenya has left at least three people dead and dozens more feared trapped, authorities confirmed Wednesday. the incident occurred during afternoon prayers as students were inside the structure, which was undergoing unauthorized construction.
The building, located in the town of Kisumu, was reportedly being illegally expanded when its foundation failed under the weight of newly poured concrete. While female students praying in a separate section of the building were able to escape, the full extent of casualties remains unknown as rescue efforts continue.
Police spokesperson Jules Abraham Abast stated the old foundation “was apparently unable to support two floors of concrete and collapsed during the pouring process.” the unauthorized expansion raises questions about building safety regulations and oversight in the region.
Rescue teams are currently working to locate and extract those still trapped within the rubble. The collapse underscores the dangers of unregulated construction and the vulnerability of educational infrastructure in some areas. this incident is highly likely to prompt a review of building codes and enforcement practices to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
