India Backs Brazil’s COP30 Presidency, Highlights ‍’Just Transition’ Win

Belém, Brazil - November 23,⁢ 2025 – India has expressed strong support for Brazil’s⁢ leadership ⁤of COP30, the annual united Nations ‍Climate change Conference which ‌concluded in Belém on November 21st, and voiced satisfaction with key outcomes from the summit, including the establishment ⁤of a “Just Transition Mechanism.”

According to an ⁣official statement released following ⁢the conclusion of the conference, india‍ “sincerely hopes in the spirit of international cooperation that⁣ promises made 33 years ago in Rio would now ‍be⁣ fulfilled due to the first steps parties have taken in ⁢Belem.”

The Just ‌Transition Mechanism⁣ was hailed as a “notable milestone” expected to help ⁣operationalize equity and climate⁤ justice at both‌ global and national levels.

India ‍also welcomed the⁤ opportunity to discuss‍ “Unilateral Trade-Restrictive Climate Measures,” noting these‌ measures are increasingly impacting‍ developing countries and violate the principles of ⁤equity and “CBDR-RC” (Common But Differentiated ⁢Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities) enshrined in the UN⁣ Framework‌ Convention on Climate Change and ⁤the Paris Agreement. New Delhi stressed ⁢the need⁣ to address these issues openly, stating that the COP30 negotiations marked a “beginning here ⁣to reverse ⁢this trend.”

The statement⁣ reiterated India’s commitment to‌ climate action ⁣based on scientific ‍evidence and equitable⁣ principles,⁢ emphasizing‍ that ⁣the ⁣burden of ⁢climate change mitigation should not fall disproportionately on ‌those least responsible⁢ for the problem. It also highlighted ‍the need for increased global support⁤ for vulnerable populations, especially in the Global South, to protect themselves from the ‍escalating impacts of climate ‍change.

India reaffirmed its commitment to⁢ a rules-based, equitable global‍ order‍ that respects⁢ national sovereignty and‌ pledged ‌to continue working ‍with⁢ all parties to ensure climate ambition is inclusive, just, and equitable.

The COP30 summit, which brought ⁣together negotiators from 194⁢ countries, was extended into Saturday ⁤due to disruptions caused by a fire at the main⁢ venue on November 20th, which resulted in non-burn injuries to 27 people. ⁣

India ‍concluded its statement by expressing gratitude to Brazil and‍ the⁣ international‌ community and calling for collective effort ‍to ⁢build⁤ a future defined by‍ fairness, solidarity, and shared prosperity.
