India Achieves Historic Success at Asian U-17 & U-15 Championships
The Asian U-17 & U-15 Championships in Chengdu, China, are proving too be a landmark event for Indian badminton, marked by an all-Indian final in the U-17 girls’ singles and a total of five medals secured by the Indian contingent - a new national record for the competition.
The U-17 girls’ singles will see Diksha Sudhakar face Lakshya Rajesh in a historic title clash, guaranteeing India a gold and silver medal – the first time two Indian players have contested a final in the Asian U-17 girls’ singles category. Both players secured their spots with convincing victories in their respective semifinal matches.
Adding to the success, Shaina Manimuthu has reached the final of the U-15 girls’ singles. The Tamil Nadu player overcame a challenging three-game match against China’s Y Yi, winning 21-12, 16-21, 21-16. This victory ensures indian representation in the finals of both age categories, a first in the event’s history. Shaina had previously demonstrated strong form with straight-game wins against opponents from Japan and Indonesia.
india’s medal haul also includes bronze medals for Jagsher Singh Khangurra in the U-17 boys’ singles and the U-17 mixed doubles pair of Jangjeet Singh Kajla and Jananika Ramesh. Jagsher’s campaign included a quarterfinal win over Hong Kong China’s Zhan Shing Yui (21-13, 21-14), while the mixed doubles pair showcased strong synergy and tactical play throughout their run to the semifinals.
With three guaranteed medals from the singles finalists and two bronze medals already secured, India’s total medal count stands at five, surpassing the country’s previous best performance at the championships, achieved in 2022.
This success reflects a notable advancement in India’s junior badminton program, driven by a more data-driven and focused training system. The recent performances build on the momentum from the Asian Junior Championships in Yogyakarta,where India also produced multiple semifinalists. Furthermore, the emerging talent is geographically diverse, with players now rising from states like Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and maharashtra, alongside customary badminton hubs like Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
