India LPG Crisis: 10kg Gas Cylinders to Address Shortage & Black Marketing

March 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

India’s state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) are considering a reduction in the amount of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supplied in standard domestic cylinders, potentially lowering the fill weight to 10 kg from the current 14.2 kg, according to multiple reports. The move is being evaluated as a response to supply disruptions stemming from heightened tensions in the Hormuz Strait and subsequent import reductions.

The proposed change aims to extend the availability of LPG to a larger number of households amidst the ongoing supply concerns. Oil companies are reportedly planning to clearly mark the reduced cylinders with a sticker indicating the 10 kg fill weight. A corresponding reduction in the price of the cylinders is also anticipated, reflecting the decreased gas volume. Officials estimate a 10 kg cylinder could last approximately one month for a typical household, compared to the current 35-40 days for a 14.2 kg cylinder.

The potential shift in LPG supply comes as India grapples with a tightening market. According to reports, the crisis has prompted authorities to initiate stricter monitoring to prevent the diversion of subsidized domestic LPG cylinders for commercial use by establishments like hotels and tea stalls. Government directives have been issued to OMCs and distributors to ensure strict adherence to distribution timelines and other regulatory controls.

The Economic Times reported that the move is a direct response to the impact of the Iran situation on LPG supplies. Business Today also highlighted the Hormuz disruption as a key factor driving the consideration of smaller cylinders. ET Now reported similar plans, emphasizing the need to manage limited stock effectively.

While the exact implementation details and timeline remain unclear, the potential change underscores the growing concerns surrounding India’s energy security. The OMCs have not yet issued a formal statement confirming the plan and further details are expected as the situation evolves.
