India Foils ISI-Backed Terror Plot: Over 200 Operatives Arrested Across 14 States
Indian security agencies arrested more than 200 individuals linked to a militant network allegedly backed by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in a coordinated multi-state operation on August 12. Home Minister Amit Shah stated the crackdown was designed to neutralize the Shahzad Bhatti network and thwart subversive attacks planned ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations.
Dismantling the Bhatti Network
The sweep spanned 14 states. According to reporting by jpost.com and tbsnews.net, it marks one of the largest security crackdowns in years. Following the raids, Amit Shah announced via social media that the government had successfully disrupted the group’s operational capacity.
Security forces seized pistols, live cartridges, and crude explosive devices. Most notably, agencies recovered grenades bearing Pakistan Ordnance Factory markings—material the government cites as proof that the network was preparing for imminent attacks.
Disposable Recruits and Hidden Chains
Mapping the organization has proven difficult. Reports from The Print indicate that the Shahzad Bhatti network utilizes “disposable recruits” and compartmentalized, “need-to-know” cell structures. These tactics insulate leadership from operatives.
Nuclear Neighbors and Conflicting Narratives
The arrests occur against a backdrop of deep-seated regional friction. India consistently accuses the Pakistani state of fostering and abetting militant groups operating within its borders; Pakistan has repeatedly denied these claims.
Tensions remain high. Last year, the two nuclear-armed neighbors engaged in a four-day military conflict after India attributed the killing of 26 men at a tourist destination in Indian-administered Kashmir to Pakistani attackers.
Silence from Islamabad
While the Indian government has publicized the scale of the arrests and the direct link to the ISI, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s foreign ministry did not provide a response to requests for comment.
