Inde Navarrette references Shane Gillis gym joke during SNL monologue
Inde Navarrette hosted Saturday Night Live and opened her monologue with a direct callback to Shane Gillis’s controversial remarks about women’s gym attire from his hosting stint, hollywoodreporter.com reported.
Addressing the Gym Joke During the Monologue
During her opening remarks on the NBC sketch comedy series, Navarrette referenced her casting as the mutant Rogue in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot. The actress explained that the physical demands of the role required heavy training. Every morning, I put on my little whore outfit, and I hit the gym,
Navarrette said on stage. The line served as an explicit callback to Gillis’s monologue three weeks prior, where he criticized women’s gym shorts by stating he did not know women dress like whores now
and warning the audience not to look.

Gillis’s original comments drew substantial online backlash. Dan Levy posted an Instagram video denouncing the joke and criticizing the network for platforming it, stating that women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores, according to thewrap.com. Alongside the gym remarks, Gillis’s October 10 appearance also generated headlines when he accidentally said an expletive during a Green Eggs and Ham sketch.
Surprise Cameos and Sketches on the Halloween Episode
Navarrette’s monologue featured several guest appearances from the SNL cast. Marcello Hernandez appeared as a sexy TSA agent, Kam Patterson portrayed Elizabeth Holmes, and Jeremy Culhane auditioned for the X-Men film by dressing as Wolverine. Grace Reiter and Veronika Slowikowska also appeared as part of a group costume referencing a viral Kelly Clarkson controversy.
The cold open brought back Tom Hanks’s character David S. Pumpkins. James Austin Johnson’s Trump also crashed the segment to discuss the upcoming midterms, alongside Saidah Belo-Osagie as Nicki Minaj and Slowikowska as former White House Press Katie Zacharia.
Obsession Breaks Records as Navarrette Joins New Projects
The hosting gig caps a breakout year for Navarrette, who starred in Curry Barker’s horror hit Obsession. The low-budget film grossed over $522 million worldwide, becoming Focus Features’ biggest movie of all time, the top-grossing festival acquisition from TIFF, and earning the biggest second-weekend box office spike in modern times outside of the Christmas holiday. In addition to her role in Marvel’s X-Men, she is slated to star in and executive produce Apple Original Films’ sci-fi thriller The Waffle House Index.

Season 52 continues with Druski scheduled to host on November 7 alongside musical guest The Strokes, marking the first time a social media influencer will host the show. John Mulaney will follow on November 14 with musical guest Phoebe Bridgers. Prior to the November 1 broadcast, the show aired a tribute featuring a clip of Patrick Stewart from his 1994 appearance.
