Portsmouth Playground Champions Inclusion with Innovative Design
PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Laughter and joy echo through Portsmouth’s Turnpike Avenue Playground, a newly unveiled space designed with all children in mind. Teh state-of-the-art playground offers a welcoming and engaging surroundings for both able-bodied children and those with disabilities, fostering a sense of community and belonging through inclusive play.
The project, a testament to community dedication, was brought to life thanks to $850,000 raised through tireless fundraising efforts and generous grants secured by volunteers. Leading the charge was Kateri buerman, founder of the Four Hearts Foundation, and a coalition of residents resolute to create a truly accessible play space.
“It brings everyone together,” Buerman explained. “Play is truly universal. We want our kids to play with everyone and learn to treat everyone the same.”
The playground isn’t just about good intentions; it’s about thoughtful design.Features like the “friendship swing” encourage face-to-face interaction and connection, while a roller rubber slide provides a sensory-friendly experience, notably beneficial for children with hearing aids who can be sensitive to static from metal surfaces. A popular attraction is the “Global Motion” equipment, offering dynamic movement opportunities for children of all abilities. For Tenley,a young girl born with a rare disorder, the playground offers a newfound sense of freedom. her mother shared that Tenley absolutely loves the soft, rubbery surface and the independence it allows.
Buerman, a mother of four herself, believes the playground offers a powerful lesson. “Kids don’t learn by being told to be inclusive,” she said. “They learn by doing, by seeing, and by playing together.”
The Turnpike Avenue Playground stands as a shining example of how community investment can create spaces that celebrate diversity and promote a more inclusive future for all children.Do you know a local hero? nominate a deserving nonprofit or volunteer for our “Community Treasures” feature: https://turnto10.com/features/community-treasures/nomination-people-person-individual-organization-group-rhode-island-massachusetts-connecticut-southern-new-england
