Context: Wildfires in Southern France

Southern France, particularly the Mediterranean region, is highly susceptible to wildfires during the summer months due to a combination of factors including hot, dry weather, strong winds (like the Mistral and Sirocco), and an abundance of flammable vegetation. Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of these wildfires, posing a growing threat to communities and ecosystems. The Aude department has experienced meaningful wildfires in recent years, including a devastating blaze in 2018 that claimed several lives. French authorities have been increasing resources dedicated to wildfire prevention and suppression, including enhanced monitoring systems, increased firefighter training, and public awareness campaigns.
