Deadly Wildfire in Southern France forces Evacuations, Claims Life
A rapidly spreading wildfire in the Aude department of southern France has resulted in at least one confirmed fatality and multiple injuries, prompting widespread evacuations. The blaze, which erupted on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, quickly consumed vegetation and threatened several communities near the town of Cabrespine.
Authorities report that a 65-year-old woman died in her home in the village of Saint-Félix-lauragaise. Her identity has not yet been officially released. A resident also sustained serious burns, and four others suffered minor injuries. The victim’s daughter, speaking to L’Indépendant newspaper, alleges that her mother was not informed of evacuation orders, a claim currently under inquiry by authorities.
Firefighters battling the blaze have themselves been impacted, with 19 sustaining injuries, including one firefighter who suffered a head trauma. The fire initially broke out along a roadside, and the cause is currently under investigation. Investigators are working to determine the origin of the fire and assess any potential negligence.
The prefecture of Aude confirmed that approximately 350 hectares (865 acres) of land, including forests and agricultural areas, have been affected by the fire. Firefighters successfully protected several farm buildings and bundles of hay bales. The area is experiencing high temperatures and dry conditions,exacerbating the fire’s spread.
