Concerns Rise as Family Demands Proof of Life for Imran Khan Amidst Isolation
Family members and supporters of former Pakistani Prime minister Imran Khan are expressing serious concern for his well-being, fueled by rumors of his death which Pakistani authorities vehemently deny.Khan has been held in isolation for nearly a month at Adiala Jail, with access to visitors and legal counsel severely restricted.
A spokesperson for Khan’s party stated he is experiencing ”the pinnacle of oppression” due to this isolation. They also accused police of using excessive force against his supporters, claiming they are being allowed to act with impunity.
Zulfi Bukhari, a senior aide to Khan, confirmed the party does not beleive the death rumors but acknowledged they have gained traction online due to the prolonged isolation. “We should just be allowed to meet him. That would put an end to all social media speculations and actual worries about his health, the decay of his health, his living conditions,” Bukhari stated.
The restricted access coincides with the government’s push to pass amendments granting additional powers to the army’s chief, Field Marshal Asim munir. these amendments would allow Munir to retain his rank even after completing his term and grant him lifelong legal immunity from prosecution. Bukhari alleges the authorities are keeping Khan “caged” to prevent him from publicly opposing these changes, noting that access to Khan allows him to release statements via social media and to the press.
Adiala jail authorities have strongly refuted all accusations, asserting that the 73-year-old politician remains within the facility and is in good physical condition. A statement from the governance confirmed the PTI leadership has been informed of Khan’s health and that he is receiving necessary care. They dismissed reports of a secret transfer as “entirely baseless.”
Rana Sanaullah Khan, an advisor to current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, also dismissed the rumors, stating Khan’s health is being monitored by a team of doctors who oversee his medicine, diet, facilities, and exercise regimen.
khan, who served as prime minister from 2018 until his removal via a parliamentary vote of no confidence in 2022, maintains that the dozens of criminal cases filed against him are politically motivated attempts to prevent his return to politics. He and his wife were sentenced to 14 and 7 years imprisonment, respectively, in January on corruption charges he claims are fabricated. PTI officials have repeatedly alleged inhumane conditions and prolonged solitary confinement, allegations authorities continue to deny.
