IEEE-HKN Launches Innovating the Future Conference for Student Researchers
The IEEE–Eta Kappa Nu honor society is preparing to host its inaugural one-day, in-person “Innovating the Future” event on 6 November, providing undergraduate and graduate student authors a structured forum to present original research papers.

Architectural Integrity in the Age of Generative AI
According to IEEE Life Fellow Sorel Reisman, a California State University professor emeritus and an IEEE-HKN governor-at-large, the academic research landscape is shifting rapidly. Because artificial intelligence increasingly compromises the validity of studies appearing in prominent journals and conference proceedings, Reisman emphasizes that up-and-coming investigators must thoroughly master the foundational benchmarks of credible, peer-reviewed academic publishing.
To support this, the organizing committee established a pipeline. Students submitted initial abstracts by 1 May. Successful candidates were then assigned an experienced volunteer IEEE member to mentor them through the research writing process, including presenting and publishing their original work. Papers accepted by 1 August secured presentation slots.
Mentorship Pipelines and Pipeline Optimization
The technical program is overseen by IEEE Life Fellow Manuel Castro, conference technical program chair, who manages the review process, organizes logistics, and handles the mentoring component. According to Castro, the conference allows student authors to grow in their skills and competencies while turning their technical activities into publications.

Serving as a mentor is Wafa Elmannai, who acts as the faculty advisor for the IEEE-HKN Gamma Alpha chapter while also holding the positions of associate professor and chair of the electrical and computer engineering department at Manhattan University located in Riverdale, N.Y. Elmannai states that research is essential to advancing technology and driving innovation, noting that mentoring encourages students to step outside their comfort zones and develop innovative solutions contributing to society.
Students note that the structured workflow acts as a stepping stone. David Kwabi-Addo, an IEEE graduate student member researching computational biology at MIT and president of the IEEE-HKN Beta Theta chapter, points out that the process offers a chance to communicate complex research to broader audiences and gather feedback from peers outside one’s immediate institution.

To support authors, organizers have deployed a series of instructional workshops hosted on the IEEE-HKN YouTube channel. These modules function as a manual for navigating academic writing:
