IEEE 2025 Social Impact Report Highlights Technology for Good

IEEE 2025 Social Impact Report Highlights Technology for Good

October 20, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

More than 500,000 members of IEEE directed volunteer efforts toward humanitarian projects, educational outreach, and digital safety frameworks throughout the past year, according to the organization’s 2025 Social Impact Report.

    The Tech TL;DR:

  • IEEE members deployed standards for online child protection and age verification, while the Mobile Outreach Vehicle program aided disaster zones.
  • Grant programs backed student IoT pollution monitors and preuniversity STEM sleepaway camps.
  • Global competitions funded solar-powered community broadband networks in Tanzania and rural telemedicine infrastructure.

Standards for Online Age Verification and Digital Services

An IEEE collaboration with Indonesian policymakers resulted in a regional first: a new regulation designed to protect children online, utilizing advanced frameworks based on the IEEE 2089-2021 and 2089.1-2024 standards. Practical procedures for assessing digital offerings are set out by the IEEE 2089-2021 Standard for an Age-Appropriate Digital Services Framework Based on the 5Rights Principles for Children. Meanwhile, guidelines for planning, detailing, assessing, and rolling out age-verification platforms are delivered through the subsequent IEEE 2089.1-2024 Standard for Online Age Verification.

Mobile Outreach Vehicle Program Supports Disaster Relief and STEM Education

The organization’s Mobile Outreach Vehicle program, launched in India, brings educational resources to communities while providing communication and technology support to relief workers and survivors during emergencies. In 2024, the MOVE fleet assisted survivors of Hurricanes Helene and Milton across the Southeastern United States. During non-emergency periods, the program participates in STEM educational events, including 25 outreach sessions such as one in San Diego in 2023.

IEEE Global Museum Manages Traveling Technology History Exhibits

The IEEE Global Museum, developed by the IEEE History Center, manages traveling exhibits designed to educate the public about the history of technology and its impact on society. Current exhibits include Unseen Signals: E. Howard Armstrong’s Radio Revolution and Microchips That Shook the World.

EPICS in IEEE Funds Student Air-Quality Projects in Skopje

The EPICS in IEEE program awarded US $290,000 last year to 48 nonprofit service projects worldwide. Among them, a student team in Macedonia developed Internet of Things-driven sensing and display devices to measure and promote awareness of pollution and air-quality issues in the capital city of Skopje.

TryEngineering Grants and Student Summer Camps

The IEEE TryEngineering initiative distributed US $70,379 in grants across 58 global programs. This included the TryEngineering Summer Institute, a nine-day sleepaway camp for students aged 13 to 17 where more than 310 participants engaged in aerospace and artificial intelligence curricula.

IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society Service Hours

The IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu honor society encompasses more than 260 collegiate chapters and 200,000 members, marking the 15th anniversary of its merger with IEEE last year. Members contributed 110,442 volunteer hours to universities and communities, conducting 827 service and outreach events and 137 STEM outreach activities.

Bridging the Digital Divide Through Connecting the Unconnected Challenges

Annual global competitions solicit innovative solutions from startups, universities, and grassroots organizations. Last year's winners included a solar-powered community broadband network deployed in Tanzania, a low-cost internet access method using FM radio combined with short message service, and a strategy utilizing rural broadband infrastructure in India to deliver medical services to isolated, tribal, and other underserved regions.

Climate Mitigation Frameworks at COP30 and Climate Week NYC

IEEE positioned itself as a trusted, neutral authority on the role of technology in climate change mitigation and adaptation by showcasing engineering solutions at COP30 and the International Symposium on Achieving a Sustainable Climate, alongside participation by IEEE Young Professionals during Climate Week NYC.

Executive Leadership Perspectives on Humanitarian Engagement

“The IEEE global community of more than 500,000 members and volunteers demonstrates what is possible when expertise is mobilized for the public good,” Sophia Muirhead, IEEE executive director and chief operating officer, stated in a news release regarding the 2025 Social Impact Report. “Technology has the power to expand opportunity, strengthen communities and improve lives, and IEEE’s mission is to ensure that this power is used responsibly, ethically, and in service of humanity.”

IEEE President Mary Ellen Randall noted in a September column that humanitarian initiatives serve a vital role in engaging younger generations. “Humanitarian programs are not only meaningful,” she wrote. “They also are magnetic. They attract younger engineers, keep them engaged, and help them build a professional identity rooted in purpose and impact.”
