ICE at Airports: Trump Deploys Agents Amid DHS Shutdown & TSA Delays

March 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents began deploying to U.S. Airports Monday, a move announced over the weekend by President Donald Trump in response to increasing security lines and delays caused by a partial government shutdown. The deployments, reportedly affecting around 14 airports including Newark, Modern Jersey; Chicago O’Hare; and Atlanta, come as a funding impasse over the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) continues.

While the exact role of ICE agents remains fluid, officials indicate they will not be directly involved in passenger screening. Tom Homan, described as Trump’s “border czar,” told CNN agents would focus on securing airport exits and entry points, aiming to free up Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel for screening duties.

The deployment follows a weekend threat from Trump, who wrote on Truth Social that he would move “brilliant and patriotic ICE Agents to the Airports” to provide security. He later stated he had told agents to “GET READY” for deployment as early as Monday, a directive that reportedly caught DHS officials off guard, with one source telling CBS News, “I have no idea what we’re doing.” (CBS News)

The situation arises from a partial shutdown of DHS, though ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are continuing operations, reportedly benefiting from funding secured in Trump’s 2025 reconciliation package. TSA, however, is operating with essential personnel who are working without pay. The agency has seen a surge in employee call-outs and resignations, with over 3,250 employees calling out on Saturday alone and more than 400 officers having “separated” from the agency, according to DHS.

The core of the dispute lies in congressional deadlock over funding for DHS, specifically regarding new accountability measures for ICE. Lawmakers reached an impasse last month, and Trump has reportedly rejected a Republican proposal to fund the remainder of DHS – including TSA and the Federal Emergency Management Agency – while delaying a decision on ICE funding. At least one arrest by ICE agents occurred Sunday at San Francisco International Airport, though the full extent of enforcement actions remains unclear. Airports across the country continue to report lengthy security lines, with some passengers facing multi-hour delays. The long-term impact on air travel and the ongoing shutdown remain uncertain as negotiations continue in Congress.
