I Quit My IT Career to Restore My Grandparents’ Wagyu Farm in Japan

August 17, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Masashi Nakamura, a 29-year-old former IT engineer, has relocated to Satsuma in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, to restore his grandparents’ aging Wagyu cattle farm. Nakamura transitioned from a corporate tech career to sustainable agriculture in late 2025, utilizing digital tools and diversified income streams to preserve a 60-year-old family legacy.

For Nakamura, the decision was sparked by a 2024 stint at a meat processing facility in Tasmania, Australia, where he first recognized the global prestige of Wagyu beef. This realization prompted him to return home just as his grandfather planned to liquidate the herd and close the business.

The Economic Pivot from IT to Agriculture

Nakamura’s transition involved a significant financial contraction. He currently earns less than half of the salary he received as an IT engineer in Osaka. To bridge the gap, he has deployed a hybrid financial model that blends traditional labor with modern digital monetization.

His current revenue streams include:

  • Part-time employment at an artificial insemination center focusing on calf management and public relations.
  • Contract labor at a neighboring Wagyu farm to gain technical expertise in cattle care.
  • Digital monetization via Instagram subscriptions and Buy Me a Coffee donations, where he shares the daily operations of the farm.

By avoiding the traditional growth model—which often involves increasing herd size at the cost of extreme physical labor—Nakamura is attempting to build a scalable, sustainable structure. He is currently developing a custom management application to optimize farm efficiency, applying his previous technical training to a rural setting.

Regional Impact in Kagoshima Prefecture

Nakamura has observed that increasing herd size can lead to a cycle of constant survival, ranging from the pressures of balancing cattle with rice farming to pushing people to their limits. Consequently, his focus is not on raising more money, but on creating a structure that can last and grow over time.

The physical demands of the work are absolute. Nakamura reports waking at 6 a.m. daily for feeding and cleaning, noting that responsibility for living animals eliminates the possibility of days off.

The Infrastructure of Rural Restoration

Nakamura has used personal savings from his time in Canada and Australia to fund renovations and maintain the necessary farm licenses.

While the financial returns are currently lower than his previous corporate salary, the integration of tech-driven management and diversified income offers a potential blueprint for the next generation of Japanese farmers.
