OpenAI CEO Warns of Economic Headwinds as Google‘s Gemini 3 Emerges as Potential AI competitor
Seoul, South Korea – OpenAI CEO Sam Altman anticipates a challenging period for his company following the growth of Google’s new AI model, gemini 3. Altman stated, “I expect the atmosphere will not be good for the time being,” and cautioned of “a temporary economic headwind for our company,” according to a report from American IT media outlet The Information. The news signals a potential shift in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape, three years after the launch of ChatGPT ignited widespread AI adoption.
The emergence of Gemini 3 underscores a growing belief that AI performance is increasingly determined by access to original, accurate data – a domain where Google’s extensive ecosystem of search, maps, and YouTube gives it a significant advantage. While OpenAI has relied heavily on external data sources, Google can integrate AI directly into its existing platforms, creating a self-sustaining cycle of value. Experts suggest this could lead to Google gaining an upper hand in the future of AI competition, perhaps impacting OpenAI’s long-term independence.
“Google has a strong foundation such as the Play Store and YouTube, and MS has an OS, office, and cloud ecosystem,” noted Choi Kyung-jin, professor of law at Gachon University and chairman of the Korean Artificial Intelligence Law Society. “There is a possibility that Open AI may be dependent on MS in the long term.” This observation highlights a broader trend: the AI industry is maturing, and a company’s ability to integrate into a robust ecosystem will likely dictate its success.
The shift marks what some are calling the beginning of the “AI transition (AX),” a period where a company’s adoption of AI will determine its survival.Professor Choi added, “Now is the time when technology begins to produce real utility, and the time when the bubble clears is the stage when truly surviving companies are revealed.” Domestic companies like Samsung,Naver,SK,and LG are actively striving to secure their place within the global AI ecosystem, recognizing that control of the AI supply chain will ultimately shape the future industrial structure.
