I Adopted My Grandson at 70 and Can’t Retire Due to Childcare Costs

August 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Ruth Olinger, a 70-year-old resident of Lakeland, Florida, is raising her seven-year-old grandson, Atlas, while grappling with significant financial strain, high day care expenses, and the reality of potentially never retiring. Olinger, who previously fostered 51 children, adopted her grandson after his mother was unable to care for him, illuminating the broader economic hurdles facing older Americans who step in to raise younger family members.

The financial pressure on older relative caregivers has become an increasingly visible economic challenge across the United States. According to Olinger, basic living and care costs have escalated dramatically. She spends $10,400 a year on day care for Atlas, alongside $4,500 annually in county property taxes and $3,800 a year for homeowner’s insurance. Operating on a $1,500 monthly Social Security income, Olinger maintains employment as an office manager at a car dealership and works remotely on foreign mission projects to cover expenses.

“I will have to work until I step into my casket because I want my son to have what he needs,” Olinger stated, reflecting on her financial reality.

The Financial Realities of Grandparent Caregiving in Florida

Raising a young child in one’s seventies involves distinct economic vulnerabilities. While state adoption assistance often helps cover health insurance costs for adopted foster children, private out-of-pocket expenses such as specialized child care, school supplies, and food create severe budget deficits for fixed-income seniors. Olinger noted that recent grocery bills bring immediate sticker shock, forcing a reliance on economical meal planning rather than discretionary spending.

Beyond household expenses, unexpected medical and developmental diagnoses compound the strain. Atlas was diagnosed with a specialized medical condition and dyslexia, requiring time-consuming diagnostic visits and dedicated educational support. These care requirements frequently force working seniors to lose paid work hours, directly impacting their immediate cash flow and long-term savings security.

Families encountering similar financial and caregiving hurdles often turn to specialized professionals.

Balancing Age, Patience, and Parenting Demands

Physical stamina and generational gaps present unique day-to-day challenges for older parents. Olinger reports that she actively participates in physical activities with Atlas—such as swimming, camping, and playground visits—though she adapts her pacing compared to raising her older children decades prior. At the same time, she credits her life experience with providing enhanced patience for homework routines and behavioral guidance.

Social isolation is another subtle consequence of late-in-life parenting. Seniors raising young children frequently find themselves misaligned with typical peer groups. They rarely fit neatly into generational retiree circles that no longer require day-to-day child rearing expenses or babysitting logistics, yet they simultaneously stand apart from younger parent cohorts.

Olinger remains focused on her primary objective: providing a stable foundation for Atlas without fostering a sense of entitlement. As multi-generational households continue to reshape family structures across Florida and the nation, the economic sustainability of older caregivers remains a critical test of modern social safety nets.
