Hurricane Humberto Intensifies too Category 5,Threatens caribbean – DW – 09/28/2025
hurricane Humberto rapidly intensified on Saturday,September 27,2025,reaching Category 5 status with maximum sustained winds of 260 kilometers per hour, according to the latest bulletin from the National Hurricane Center of the USA.
As of Saturday, the storm was located approximately 560 kilometers northeast of the Northern Sotavento Islands and is moving west at a speed of 17 km/h.
Meteorologists warn that Humberto poses a threat of hazardous waves and strong currents to the Northern Sotavento Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda throughout the weekend. The National Meteorological Service in Puerto Rico has issued a notice to small vessels, advising residents to stay ashore and avoid needless travel as waves generated by Humberto are expected to reach around 2 meters in Atlantic waters.
Authorities are also urging beachgoers to heed warning flag systems due to the increased risk of rip currents.
Florida Concerns rise Amidst Recent Rainfall
South Florida authorities, already dealing with saturated conditions from heavy rains throughout September, are closely monitoring Humberto’s path. A tropical storm alert was issued Saturday for portions of the Florida coast, extending from northern west Palm Beach to an area north of Daytona Beach.
In Homestead, Florida – a community still bearing the scars of Hurricane Andrew in 1992 – emergency director Jaime Hernández expressed concern over potential resident complacency.
“Too many inhabitants from southern Florida who may have experienced limited impacts of storms in recent years, such as Hurricane Irma in 2017, have left these events mistakenly believing that they have gone through the worst,” Hernández stated. “We know very well the importance of having an emergency plan and staying informed.”
Dominican Republic Braces for Impact
A tropical disturbance associated with the broader weather system caused important rainfall in the Dominican Republic on Friday, prompting authorities to evacuate hundreds of people and declare a red alert in five provinces.
