Gangland figure targeted in assault conviction

A man has been convicted for his role in an assault on the son of a prominent gangland figure. The incident is linked to a wider campaign against police and hotel staff that began in 2015.

The convicted individual, whose name has not been released in connection with this specific assault, was involved in an altercation with Malcolm McKeown Jr. The attack occurred at a petrol station in Lurgan. According to reports, the assailant exited a BMW X5, approached McKeown Jr.’s vehicle, opened the car door, and proceeded to punch him in the face. McKeown Jr. was then kneed and punched again after exiting his car.

The broader investigation into the gang’s activities, which includes McKeown Sr., led to police placing covert listening devices in a car belonging to an associate. Recordings from these devices reportedly captured discussions about drug deals, plans to set fire to a pub in Craigavon, and preparations involving balaclavas, gloves, scaling walls, and petrol bombs.

When approached by the Sunday World regarding the assault, the convicted individual stated, “Its nothing to do with you. It happened yeah but it’s all been dealt with in court already.”
