HPV Self-Tests Now Available for Cervical Cancer Screening in Norrbotten County
Women in Norrbotten County now have the option of taking a self-test for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) as part of their gynecological cell sampling process. The self-test, which can be taken at home, is offered alongside customary sampling by a midwife.
The self-test detects both HPV and cell changes in the cervix and is considered as safe and reliable as tests performed by a midwife, with results analyzed in the same manner. A sampling kit, complete with instructions, can be ordered through 1177 Vårdguiden (the regional healthcare guide) but requires a valid summons for gynecological cell sampling.
More data and ordering of the HPV self-test is available on the 1177 website.
Appointments with a midwife can remain scheduled even after ordering a self-test. Test results are typically available within 90 days and will be sent to the woman’s registered address.
Automatic Distribution for Specific Birth Years
Women born between 1947 and 1952 will receive a self-test kit automatically in the mail and do not need to place an order themselves. Karolinska University Hospital is managing the distribution to this age group as part of a nationwide rollout, with Norrbotten County being the last region to implement the program. The self-tests are expected to be mailed to women in Norrbotten in November of this year.
