How We Bought a $72,000 House in Spain and Cut Our Monthly Living Costs to $1,216
Leaving the U.S. behind for a $72,000 home in Castil de Campos, Spain, a former corporate marketing strategist and mental health worker Luci and her family traded domestic stability for a creative lifestyle, documenting an international move that reshaped their monthly expenses and long-term career path.
The Leap Across the Atlantic
In July 2025, after watching a YouTube channel for years, a family of three bought a 5-bedroom, 2-bathroom, 1,600-square-foot house for about $72,000 in the Andalusian village of Castil de Campos, located in southern Spain. Prior to the purchase, the couple lived in a beach bungalow in Ormond Beach, Florida, where the husband worked in marketing for a large American corporation and Luci worked in the mental health field. Seeking more freedom, access to nature, and quality family time, they decided to make a change. The husband is Dominican-American, and Luci is Cuban-American; both speak Spanish, and he had previously lived in Spain as an English teacher 20 years prior. Over five months, they rented out their Florida home, withdrew their 7-year-old daughter from school, packed their keepsakes and art supplies, and shipped everything across the Atlantic in a single container. They boarded a plane for Spain while their Digital Nomad Visa was still processing, receiving approval only after arrival.
Finding and Funding the Andalusian Property
Upon arriving in Spain, the family stayed in an Airbnb in Alicante for six weeks while looking at properties, quickly realizing that rental prices were higher than expected. When they spotted the Castil de Campos listing online in July 2025, they bought the home fully in cash without a mortgage. Since settling into the Andalusian village surrounded by olive groves and mountains, their monthly living budget for a family of three totals about $1,216. This figure comprises approximately $350 for groceries, $116 for water, $116 for electricity, $116 for phone and internet, $230 for health insurance, $127 for their accountant, $103 for social security, and $58 for home insurance.
Building a Creative Studio and Business Retreat
The family has invested approximately $60,000 into transforming their property, including a guest house, pool, and outdoor areas. In April, they opened a creative studio in the village offering workshops in pottery, sewing, nature-inspired arts, and handmade crafts to provide a space for visitors and locals to slow down and immerse themselves in art. Their first month generated $50 in earnings, which they viewed as early validation for their idea, aided by the art supplies shipped across the ocean that reduced startup costs. Meanwhile, the husband has continued working as a freelance marketing strategist, earning roughly $7,000 to $9,000 per month depending on contracts, which allows them to fund property upgrades and build the business gradually rather than relying on it for immediate family support. Their home retreat, Stay & Create, is scheduled to open to the public in May 2027.
Exploring the Surrounding Region
The family utilizes the village as a base to explore nearby locations, noting that surrounding villages like Iznájar, Lucena, and Baena offer new areas to explore. They travel to Granada for outdoor activities, Jaén for shopping, and Córdoba for a night out in the city, all roughly an hour away, while also taking trips to Barcelona, Madrid, and Paris. For daily provisions, nearby Priego de Córdoba features tapas spots and fruit and vegetable stands with fresh produce, supplemented by a weekly van delivering items from local farms directly to their village.
