How to Create & Edit Your Bitmoji Avatar on Snapchat

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Snapchat users can now create and modify their personalized Bitmoji avatars directly within the Snapchat mobile application, according to updated support documentation released this week.

The process begins by tapping the Profile icon located at the top of the Snapchat screen, then selecting the “Create My Avatar” option. Snapchat then guides users through the avatar creation process. Existing Bitmoji avatars can be edited by accessing the customization menu, also found through the Profile icon. Users can swipe down or tap their avatar to open the menu, then select “Avatar” to adjust appearance, or “Fashion” to change clothing. Options to update the avatar’s presentation in “Selfie” or “Scene” modes are also available.

Snapchat’s support materials emphasize that full customization of Bitmoji avatars is currently exclusive to the Snapchat mobile app. The functionality is not available through the web or desktop versions of the platform.

Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, has recently expanded Bitmoji capabilities with AI-generated options, as reported by Social Media Today. These AI features allow users to generate outfit ideas for their avatars, which can then be incorporated into the existing customization tools within Snapchat. The generated images can serve as a basis for creating a more realistic likeness, though users retain the option to disregard the AI suggestions.

Bitmoji, acquired by Snap Inc., allows users to create a cartoon avatar and share it across various platforms, including Snapchat, iMessage, and Gboard. According to the Bitmoji website, the service also offers features like Friendmoji in Chat, 3D Bitmoji World Lenses, and Bitmoji Geofilters.
