90-year-Old Karate Master Shares Secrets to a Long Life
HARRISBURG, PA – At 90 years old, Ben Rocuskie isn’t slowing down. The Sunbury, Pennsylvania native recently achieved a 9th-degree black belt in karate and continues to study pressure point techniques in self-defence, proving that learning – and staying active - has no age limit. Rocuskie credits a combination of martial arts, lifelong learning, and a loving marriage for his remarkable longevity.
Born november 14, 1934, Rocuskie’s early life was shaped by a simpler time, recalling memories of an outhouse, drawing water from a spring, and listening to ”The lone Ranger” on the radio. He worked in and around coal mines and as a pinsetter in a bowling alley before graduating from drexel University in 1960 and becoming a professional engineer in 1961.
Rocuskie began his martial arts journey at age 48, taking karate classes at the dojo in Holy Name of Jesus Church in Harrisburg. Fifteen years later, he was promoted to senior instructor of both karate and tai chi, a position he held for the next 25 years. His dedication is evidenced by the numerous awards and trophies he’s earned in local and state competitions.
Though, Rocuskie doesn’t identify as a “warrior.” “A warrior is a fighter. Karate is self-defense,” he explains.
He attributes his health and vitality to karate, tai chi, and his wife of 68 years, Marlene, whom he affectionately calls “my angel.” The couple has three children and six grandchildren. Rocuskie’s philosophy centers on mindful decision-making. “You have two choices, and each choice brings more choices,” he says.
He emphasizes the importance of continuous learning, expressing disappointment when students stop practicing after achieving their 1st-degree black belt.”that’s only the beginning. When you graduate from 8th grade, from high school, from college, it’s called ‘commencement.’ It’s the beginning. That’s what the black belt is. Right now, I’m studying pressure point techniques in self-defense. After 42 years in martial arts, yes, I can still learn.”
