How Kimi Antonelli Can Win the F1 World Championship, Il Post reports
Kimi Antonelli can win the Formula 1 World Championship at the Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday evening at the age of 20, making him the youngest driver ever to secure the title and the first Italian to do so since Alberto Ascari in 1953, Il Post reported.
What Antonelli Needs on Sunday in Mexico City
To secure the championship mathematically during Sunday’s race, Antonelli driving for Mercedes needs to finish no higher than ninth place. If his teammate and closest title rival George Russell fails to win the race, a tenth-place finish will suffice. Antonelli can even claim the world title without scoring any points at all, provided neither Russell nor Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton wins the grand prix. Hamilton currently sits third in the standings, trailing Russell by just a single point.
Qualifying set the starting grid for the race, with Hamilton setting the fastest lap to claim pole position. Antonelli starts the Mexican Grand Prix from the fourth position. The race begins at 9:00 PM Italian time, broadcast live on Sky Sport and streaming on Now, with a delayed free-to-air broadcast scheduled on TV8.
Consistency Across the 2026 Season
Antonelli’s path to the championship point rests on a season defined by steady points finishes. Across 18 races this year, he has finished outside the top five only twice. Even a 19th-place start at Monza earlier in the season ended with an outright victory.
Following the chequered flag in Mexico City, the Formula 1 calendar moves to Brazil and Las Vegas. The final rounds remain subject to scheduling adjustments, with potential stops in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, or alternatively a conclusion at Imola.
That season-closing stretch will determine the final constructor and driver standings once the championship fight in Mexico concludes.
