Houston Police Vehicles and Sergeant Hit by Suspected Drunk Drivers at Crash Scene
Early Saturday morning, multiple police vehicles and a sergeant were struck by suspected intoxicated drivers who breached the barriers surrounding a deadly collision in Houston, according to the Houston Police Department.
The Fatal Collision on Hillcroft Avenue
Houston police officers responded to the 3100 block of Hillcroft Avenue just before 2 a.m. Saturday following reports of a severe motor vehicle crash. Multiple witnesses told investigators that a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in the northbound lanes of Hillcroft ran a red light at Richmond Avenue and crashed into another vehicle. One person had to be extracted from the wreckage by emergency responders. That individual was transported to an area hospital, where medical personnel pronounced them dead. The identity of the victim has not been released by authorities.
The driver accused of running the red light and causing the initial collision fled the immediate area on foot. Officers took the suspect into custody a short distance away. Police evaluated the driver at the scene, where authorities stated the individual did not meet the legal threshold for intoxication.
Barrier Breaches and Police Vehicle Strikes
As officers secured the intersection to investigate the fatal wreck, multiple civilian vehicles drove directly through the established police barriers. Several of these unauthorized vehicles struck parked police cruisers. A police sergeant working the scene was hit by one of the oncoming vehicles, sustaining minor injuries.
A passenger inside the first vehicle to breach the police perimeter was arrested on an outstanding felony warrant. Other motorists who drove past the blockade were detained on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Those drivers were transported by law enforcement for further evaluation and processing.
Ongoing Investigation Timeline
The Houston Police Department continues its active investigation into both the initial fatal collision at Hillcroft Avenue and Richmond Avenue and the subsequent security breaches at the cordoned-off crash site. Investigators have not yet released additional details regarding the total number of vehicles involved in the barrier breaches or the identities of the motorists facing potential intoxication and traffic charges.
