Houston Homeowner Shoots Man Breaking Into Car

HOUSTON – A homeowner in Northeast Houston shot a would-be burglar early Tuesday, police reported. the incident occurred at a residence in the 14700 block of East Hardy Road around 2:30 a.m., according to the Houston Police Department.

The homeowner, whose name has not been released, confronted an intruder attempting to break into the home and discharged a firearm, striking the suspect. The injured suspect was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is now in custody. This shooting highlights the ongoing concerns about property crime in the area and raises questions about the boundaries of self-defense within city limits. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and will present the case to a Harris County grand jury.

Investigators stated the suspect was attempting to force entry through a back door when the homeowner intervened. HPD’s Major Assaults & Special Prosecutions Unit is leading the inquiry.

“The homeowner was able to defend themselves and their property,” said lieutenant R. Willians with the Houston Police Department during a brief press conference. “We are gathering all the evidence to determine if the shooting was justified.”

Cathy Hernandez with Click2Houston reports that the suspect’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family. The incident occurred in a residential neighborhood that has experienced a recent uptick in burglaries, prompting increased neighborhood watch activity.
