Houston Airbnb Owner Reports Repeated Burglaries, Theft of TVs and Luggage
A Houston Airbnb owner says a burglar has repeatedly targeted his property, stealing televisions, luggage, and even toiletries in a series of break-ins this week. The owner, identified as Chiu, reported the incidents to Houston police after discovering multiple units had been compromised.
The burglar frist struck early Tuesday morning, allegedly entering six separate Airbnb units and making off with six 55-inch televisions. He returned Wednesday morning, entering an occupied room while guests were asleep and stealing luggage before pilfering another television from an unoccupied unit later that same day. The ongoing thefts highlight vulnerabilities in short-term rental security and raise concerns for both property owners and guests.
According to Chiu, the burglar appears to be gaining access to the property without forcing entry, leading him to suspect the thief is compromising lockboxes and stealing room keys. Beyond the televisions and luggage, the suspect also reportedly took blankets, toilet paper, shampoos, and conditioners.
“Even took some blankets, some toilet paper, and some shampoos and conditioners,” Chiu told investigators.
Police confirmed they have taken a report regarding the incidents and indicated the suspect was observed riding a bicycle. Chiu has already replaced some of the stolen televisions and is taking proactive steps to enhance security, including installing additional cameras and personally camping out on the property.
“That’s why I’m camping out tonight, and I’m actually trying to…install some more cameras too,” Chiu said.
