Driverless Buses at Hong Kong Airport Halted After Collision
Safety Inspections Underway Following Incident Involving Autonomous Vehicles
Hong Kong International Airport has paused its autonomous bus operations after two of the vehicles collided. Authorities are conducting inspections, while experts are calling for a thorough investigation into the cause and the suitability of the technology.
Details of the Incident
The airport’s driverless buses, used to transport personnel, were involved in a minor collision within a restricted area. The incident occurred around 4:20 pm on Sunday. Neither bus had passengers at the time, and airport functions were unaffected.
An image circulating online showed the aftermath of the collision at a taxiway intersection near Terminal 1. A designated give-way line was present.
The picture suggested that one bus failed to stop at the line, driving into another shuttle traveling on the main taxiway.
