Holy Cross beats Dartmouth in shootout after 1-1 tie

October 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Dartmouth and Holy Cross Skate to 1-1 Tie Before Shootout Decision

The Dartmouth women’s ice hockey team outshot Holy Cross 32-28 and skated to a 1-1 tie on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, at Thompson Arena before the Crusaders secured a 1-0 shootout victory following a scoreless five-minute overtime, dartmouthsports.com reported.

Kayla Gerson opened the scoring for Dartmouth at even strength at 10:30 of the first period. Miami Jones and Addy Cowan picked up the assists on the play, giving the Big Green a 1-0 advantage that capped an opening period featuring 11 shots on target.

Goaltender Michaela Hesová protected that lead through heavy pressure, stopping 27 of 28 shots across 65 minutes. Hesová turned away multiple shots in the second period while Dartmouth played shorthanded four times. The Big Green penalty kill successfully neutralized four of Holy Cross’s five power-play opportunities on the night.

Holy Cross capitalized early in the third period when Naemi Herzig scored on the power play at 2:55, evening the score at 1-1 with assists from Violet Carroll and Manuela Heidenberger. Dartmouth pressed immediately afterward, generating 11 shots in the final frame alone, but Holy Cross turned all of them away.

Neither side broke the deadlock during the five-minute extra session. Hesová stopped all five shots she faced in overtime, forcing the game into a shootout. Hesová turned aside six of seven attempts in the shootout, but the Crusaders stopped all seven Dartmouth tries before converting in the seventh round to settle the outcome.

Ellie Zakrajsheck led the Dartmouth offense with five shots, while Ava Giroux, Hailey Maguire, and Cowan each contributed four. At the faceoff dot, Dartmouth won 29 of 53 draws, led by Ella Inglis with 13 wins alongside seven apiece from Sophia Chard and Cowan.

The Big Green returns to Thompson Arena to face Holy Cross (1-4-3) at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026.
