Sammy Smith Claims First Career NASCAR Truck Series Win at Talladega
Sammy Smith won a chaotic, overtime NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Talladega Superspeedway on Friday, Oct. 23, crossing the finish line 0.091 seconds ahead of Tyler Ankrum in a four-wide battle for second place, nascar.com reported.
Smith Earns First Career Craftsman Truck Series Win
The victory marked Smith’s first career win in the Craftsman Truck Series in his 11th start, coming just hours after he announced a full-time move to TRICON Garage for next season. Driving the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet, the 22-year-old Iowa native led a race-high 21 of 86 laps on the Alabama tri-oval. The finish capped an afternoon featuring five caution periods and multiple multi-truck wrecks, culminating in a green-white-checkered overtime restart.
Tyler Ankrum secured second place by a razor-thin 0.002 seconds over Smith’s teammate Austin Green, who delivered a strong run in his lone start of the season. ThorSport’s Ty Majeski and championship leader Kaden Honeycutt rounded out the top five in a frantic dash to the checkered flag.

Lead Changes Tie Record as Tire Failures Cause Wrecks
frontstretch.com noted that the event set a competitive benchmark with 32 lead changes, tying the all-time Truck Series record previously set at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 13. However, the race was heavily dictated by mechanical attrition. Within the opening 40 laps alone, seven distinct tire failures struck the field, catching out contenders such as Corey Heim, Justin Haley, Christian Eckes, Sammy Smith, and Stewart Friesen.
Friesen’s cut tire on lap 17 triggered the first major multi-truck incident known as the “Big One,” collecting eight entries in Turns 1 and 2. The melee eliminated NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart, making his second start of the year in the No. 25 Ram truck, and media personality Cleetus McFarland.
Championship Implications With Two Races Remaining
The attrition reshaped the playoff standings as the series heads toward the title conclusion. Kaden Honeycutt maintained his points lead, expanding his advantage over Layne Riggs to 43 points. Riggs finished eighth after starting alongside Smith on the front row for the final restart.
Other title contenders endured severe setbacks. Christian Eckes slipped to fifth in the standings, 144 points off the lead, after finishing three laps down in 21st place. Meanwhile, Gio Ruggiero, Daniel Hemric, Ben Rhodes, Tyler Ankrum, and Grant Enfinger were officially eliminated from championship contention following the race’s heavy attrition.
Sammy Smith wins the Truck Series race at Talladega. It is Smith's first-career truck win. Kaden Honeycutt expands his points lead to 43 over Layne Riggs.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series continues its playoff schedule on Friday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m. ET with the Black’s Tire 200 at Martinsville Speedway.
