New York governor Moves to Protect Healthcare for Millions Amidst Federal Cuts

Albany, NY – Facing the imminent loss of healthcare coverage for nearly 1.7 million New Yorkers due to federal funding cuts, New York’s governor today announced a significant shift in coverage aimed at mitigating the impact of what she termed a “devastating” decision by Washington Republicans.

The cuts, stemming from legislation passed under the previous governance, threaten the Essential Plan, a vital healthcare program relied upon by working families, individuals striving to make ends meet, and those diligently working but still facing financial hardship.

“For months, I’ve warned about the consequences of these reckless cuts,” the Governor stated. “Today, we are confronting that reality. We refuse to stand by while Washington punishes vulnerable New Yorkers.”

To safeguard coverage for as many residents as possible, the state will transition 1.3 million Essential Plan members to the state’s basic Health Program, unlocking access to emergency funding previously unavailable. However, this action leaves approximately 450,000 New Yorkers still at risk of losing their healthcare.

Notably, this includes 127,000 constituents represented by New York’s seven Republican Members of Congress, a point the Governor emphasized, accusing them of prioritizing tax breaks for the wealthy over the healthcare needs of their communities.

“This doesn’t have to be this way,” she urged. “Republicans can act now to pass a three-year delay of the cuts to healthcare eligibility and ensure every New Yorker remains covered.” The Governor also called on the Center for Medicare and Medicaid services to collaborate with the state in identifying affordable healthcare alternatives.

Beyond immediate federal action, the Governor highlighted a systemic issue within new York State. Many Essential Plan beneficiaries work part-time, often for large retailers and corporations that intentionally limit employee hours to avoid providing health insurance. She called for these employers to shoulder their duty and provide coverage for their workforce, rather than shifting the burden onto taxpayers.

“The message from across our state is clear: we can and must act together to stop these devastating impacts before it’s too late,” the Governor concluded.
