History and Hauntings at the Historic Western Heritage Center in Billings

History and Hauntings at the Historic Western Heritage Center in Billings

Sandstone Landmark on Montana Avenue Draws Decades of Unexplained Encounters

Walk past 2822 Montana Avenue on an autumn evening, and the Richardsonian Romanesque sandstone structure feels distinctly alive.

That sandstone landmark was dedicated in October 1901 as the original Parmly Billings Memorial Library. Designed by architect Charles S. Haire and financed by Frederick Billings Jr. in memory of his 25-year-old brother, the building served the growing Yellowstone River Valley until collections outgrew the space in 1969. The Western Heritage Center museum eventually took over the historic rooms in 1971, earning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places the following year.

Priscilla and the Upper-Floor Footsteps

The building’s most famous reported occupant is a young spirit locals call Priscilla. According to accounts gathered by Southeast Montana, a long-time employee once discovered child-sized footprints tracking across the dust of the attic walkways. Meanwhile, The Billings Gazette noted that phantom laughter has been heard echoing from the tight, winding steps of the tower.

During the decades when books filled the rooms rather than historical artifacts, a staff librarian routinely avoided the top floor entirely. The employee reported a heavy, uneasy atmosphere hanging over the upper stack levels, accompanied by creaking floorboards and unexplained whirling sounds whenever she approached the old newspaper archives.

The Elderly Man Spotted in the Basement

Priscilla shares the space with another recurring apparition. The Billings Gazette documented reports of an elderly male spirit inhabiting the lower levels, with author Ednor Therriault suggesting in “Haunted Montana” that the figure might resemble western artist J.K. Ralston. Reinforcing these local accounts, two museum interns independently spotted the exact same elderly man in the building without any prior knowledge of earlier sightings.

Ghost hunter and author Karen Stevens told KULR-8 that the structure stands as one of the most haunted locations across Montana. No physical evidence substantiates these claims, and the encounters exist only in local folklore and personal testimony.

Exhibits and Artifacts That Outweigh the Legends

Visitors seeking tangible history rather than ghost stories find plenty to examine inside the accredited Smithsonian affiliate. The museum houses more than 16,000 artifacts detailing the cultural and industrial growth of the Northern Plains. Changing gallery displays, extensive oral histories, and guided walking tours of downtown Billings anchor its daily operations.

Murals tower over the nearby asphalt and brick throughout the downtown district, contrasting the area’s industrial freeway facade with vibrant public art. Whether or not visitors encounter anything unusual on the twisty tower stairs, the 1901 landmark remains a central pillar of local heritage.
