Hernán Bermúdez, the former secretary of Security of Tabasco, Mexico, has been arrested in Paraguay on accusations of leading a criminal organization. The arrest, confirmed Saturday, represents a meaningful progress in efforts to combat transnational crime, according to Paraguayan President Santiago Peña.
Bermúdez served as head of the Secretariat of Security in Tabasco during the governorship of Adam Augusto López. The accusations against him surfaced in July, prompting López – now a leader of the Morena party senators – to state that any irregularities should be investigated adn that he would cooperate fully with authorities. CNN has reached out to López for comment.
The arrest is being hailed by Paraguay as a “forceful blow to transnational organized crime,” as stated by President Peña on X (formerly Twitter). Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to PeñaS message, thanking Paraguay for its collaboration and asserting that mexico’s strategy of addressing impunity is reducing violence within the country. Sheinbaum stated on X, “Our strategy for the attention and zero impunity decreases violence in our country.”
The governments of both Mexico and Paraguay have acknowledged the event, signaling a coordinated response to cross-border criminal activity. Investigations are ongoing, and the full extent of the alleged criminal network led by Bermúdez remains under scrutiny.
