Giant hailstones and destructive winds swept across south-east Queensland this afternoon, causing widespread damage and disruption. Hailstones measuring 5.5-6cm were recorded at Tamrookum, as a severe storm system moved north, impacting areas from the Gold Coast to Brisbane.
The State Emergency Service (SES) responded to 1,000 calls for assistance amid the intense weather. Flights at brisbane Airport were temporarily halted for approximately one hour, and residents in affected areas are bracing for further heavy rainfall. The Bureau of Meteorology warns that the system is continuing to track northwards, posing an ongoing threat to communities along the Queensland coast.
