The film, a Searchlight Pictures release, is slated for a November 21 theatrical debut.
“rental Family” centers on Kenji (Brendan Fraser), a lonely widower who hires a family for the day to fill the void in his life. The film explores themes of grief,connection,and the evolving definition of family. Takehiro Hira, Mari Yamamoto, Shannon Gorman, and Akira Emoto round out the principal cast.
The project originated in 2019, with Fraser officially joining the cast in May 2023, following his Academy Award-winning performance in “The Whale.” Hikari, known for her 2022 feature “37 Seconds,” a film exploring themes of sexuality and disability, directs from her own screenplay. The film marks Hikari’s second narrative feature.
