Heraldodemexico: Heavy Rains and Cold Front Hit Mexico Oct 14-16

Heraldodemexico: Heavy Rains and Cold Front Hit Mexico Oct 14-16

October 15, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Freezing morning lows dropping to 0 to 5 degrees Celsius will strike mountainous zones across multiple Mexican states from Wednesday, October 14, through Friday, October 16, as a strong polar air mass reinforces the season’s second cold front, heraldodemexico.com.mx reported.

The severe weather pattern stems from an interaction between the second cold front, an upper-level trough, the subtropical jet stream, and a low-pressure channel. This atmospheric setup brings heavy rainfall alongside the sweeping temperature drop across northern, northeastern, eastern, and central regions.

Freezing Mountain Lows and Heavy Rains on Wednesday

During the early hours of Wednesday, October 14, minimum temperatures of 0 to 5 °C are expected in the high-altitude sierras of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Michoacán, Guanajuato, the State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca, according to heraldodemexico.com.mx. Tropical cyclone Simon sits over the middle portion of Sinaloa, generating intense rainfall and strong coastal winds with high waves in Sinaloa and Nayarit.

Rainfall totals will reach 75 to 150 millimeters in central and southern Sinaloa and northern Nayarit. Meanwhile, 50 to 75 millimeters of rain will hit northeastern and eastern Chihuahua, northwestern Coahuila, northern and central Durango, western Zacatecas, and western Michoacán. Lighter downpours and squalls span Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Guanajuato, the State of Mexico, Mexico City, Morelos, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Chiapas, Tabasco, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.

Cold and Storm Conditions on Thursday and Friday

On Thursday, October 15, intense rainfall up to 150 millimeters targets northern Coahuila. Heavy-to-very-heavy storms affect eastern Chihuahua and northern Durango. Mountainous areas in Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, the State of Mexico, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca will again experience morning lows between 0 and 5 °C.

By Friday, October 16, the polar air mass continues its sweep, keeping morning minimums at 0 to 5 °C in the high sierras of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, the State of Mexico, Mexico City, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca, as reported by heraldodemexico.com.mx. Heavy rains shift toward eastern Coahuila, northern Chihuahua, northern Durango, northwestern Nuevo León, western Michoacán, western Guerrero, northern Oaxaca, and northern Quintana Roo.

Cold weather and freezing mountain conditions will persist into Saturday, October 17, extending the low-temperature alerts to high-altitude zones in Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí, and other previously affected entities as the polar front moves across the country.
