## Early Detection Makes Sense! – University Hospital Erlangen Highlights Head and Neck Cancer Awareness
The University Hospital Erlangen’s neck-nose and throat clinic – head and neck surgery (director: Prof. Dr. Sarina Müller) is participating in the “Make Sense Campaign” to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and targeted prevention of head and neck tumors during the action week from September 15-20, 2025. ”The earlier the tumor is discovered and the smaller it is indeed, the better the chances of recovery,” emphasizes Prof.Müller. “Sensitization and early detection therefore make one thing above all: meaning!”
Head and neck tumors are the seventh most common cancer in Europe, occurring approximately half as often as lung cancer but twice as often as cervical cancer. Despite a rising number of cases, public awareness of these malignant diseases remains low, often leading to late-stage diagnoses which significantly complicate treatment. Individuals who regularly smoke and/or consume alcohol are at particularly high risk, as is infection with human papilloma viruses (HPV).
### Comprehensive Care at the Head and Neck tumor Center
Patients with suspected head and neck tumors can access specialized care at the Head and Neck Tumor Center of the university Clinic (speaker: Prof.Dr.Marco Kesting, spokeswoman: Prof. Dr. Sarina Müller). “We offer diagnosis, treatment and aftercare under one roof. Thus, everything remains in one hand and we can adapt each individual step individually to the patient,” explains Prof. Müller.
The center adopts a holistic approach, integrating nutrition, movement, and mental health into therapy. A unique initiative in Germany, a weekly support group for patients with head and neck tumors and their families, has been established. These meetings take place every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Cafeteria of the ENT Clinic, coinciding with consultation hours for tumor diseases and tumor axle care in the head and neck area. Members of the regional association for larynx operated and head-neck tumor patients V. attend to share their experiences and provide guidance.
