Hayden Panettiere Dies at 36: Remembering the Nashville Star

August 17, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Hayden Panettiere died at the age of 36 after being found unresponsive in a Greenville, South Carolina, apartment on Sunday, August 16, 2026. Local law enforcement and medical responders arrived at the scene following an emergency call reporting cardiac arrest, and preliminary investigations indicate no signs of foul play while an autopsy remains scheduled.

According to TMZ, an unidentified friend discovered the unresponsive actress at 1:51 p.m. on Sunday, prompting paramedics to deploy advanced life support measures before pronouncing her dead at the scene.

Preliminary Findings and the Greenville Investigation

Greenville police confirmed that initial assessments of the apartment showed no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances. An official autopsy is scheduled to determine the precise medical cause of death. Sources close to the investigation indicated to TMZ that Panettiere and her on-again, off-again partner, Brian Hickerson, had flown from Los Angeles to South Carolina just one day prior to the tragedy.

The unexpected loss brings a profound sense of grief to communities far beyond South Carolina, stretching from her roots in Palisades, New York, to the production hubs of Los Angeles and Nashville.

A Life Marked by Triumphs and Enduring Hardships

Panettiere spent her life in the public eye, beginning her career in commercials at just eleven months old before achieving status as cheerleader Claire Bennet on Heroes and later starring as Juliette Barnes in Nashville. Her film credits also included the Scream franchise as Kirby Reed, alongside vocal performances in video game titles like Until Dawn and Kingdom Hearts.

Yet, behind the accolades and public appearances, the actress contended with severe personal trials. Earlier this year, Panettiere opened up publicly about her battles with addiction, which began when she was just 15 years old. In her memoir, This is Me: A Reckoning—which became a New York Times bestseller—she detailed the pressures of fame and her reliance on prescription substances.

Those struggles were compounded by devastating personal grief. Just over three years prior to her own death, her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, passed away at the age of 28 due to complications from an enlarged heart, alongside his own battles with mental health and addiction. In a candid interview with Jay Shetty in May, Panettiere described the profound agony of that loss, stating, “There’s nothing in my life that feels like losing my other half. He was born to be the yin to my yang.”

Physical Pain and Final Months

In addition to her emotional burdens, Panettiere suffered from physical injuries sustained over years of work on film and television sets. She spent the year leading up to her death dealing with lower back pain, a condition that left her using crutches and raising concerns about nerve damage.

“I’ve been dealing with an injury for the past year. Some nerve damage in my lower back,” she shared with Women’s Health in May. “I wasn’t able to bend my toes or lift my foot at all. No one was able to give me a solid answer… It was like that for so long. I was sitting there going ‘Oh my gosh, am I going to be paralyzed for the rest of my life?’ It’s the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me physically for sure.”
