The fast-moving Hawk Fire erupted on a Northern Nevada hillside outside Reno on Saturday, August 22, 2026, quickly expanding to more than 10,500 acres by Saturday evening, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Driven by high winds, the blaze threatened approximately 1,000 homes, prompted widespread evacuation orders, and forced the emergency evacuation of a local hospital.

Emergency Declarations and Rapid Spread in Washoe County

In response to the escalating threat, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County as emergency crews and firefighters battled the wind-driven flames. According to a statement shared on social media by Governor Lombardo, the fire was spreading quickly and threatening numerous residential structures. Truckee Meadows Fire Chief Richard Edwards described the blaze in a video update as a very dynamic incident driven by intense winds that pushed the flames rapidly into residential neighborhoods, creating severe challenges for firefighters working to protect lives and property.

Local authorities confirmed that some structures had already burned in the fire. Reno Mayor Hillary Shieve issued a public statement expressing support for impacted community members and urging residents to heed evacuation orders immediately, noting that first responders were heroically fighting the high winds and flames to secure homes, businesses, livestock, and pets.

Hospital Evacuations and Critical Infrastructure Impacts

Northwest Specialty Hospital announced on Sunday that it had evacuated all patients from the facility out of an abundance of caution due to the Hawk Fire. According to the hospital’s statement, patients were safely transferred to appropriate locations for uninterrupted care, and no patients or staff remained in the building. Additionally, Northern Nevada Health Systems temporarily closed the emergency room at North Valleys north of Reno because of nearby evacuations.

Parts of the U.S. 395 highway were closed, and thousands of customers lost power across the affected region. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office monitored the situation closely as the fire burned near the county detention center.

Weather Conditions and Regional Fire Risk

While the overall fire weather threat for the West decreased slightly by early Sunday, elevated risks persisted across parts of the Northwest and the northern Rockies. High temperatures in the 90s persisted across several Western areas, including Reno, Salt Lake City, and Boise, compounding difficulties for firefighting crews. Red Flag Warnings remained active for select areas in Washington, Idaho, and Montana, covering regions previously impacted by seasonal wildfires.
