Hantavirus Cruise Ship Outbreak: Latest News and Health Facts
A third British citizen has contracted hantavirus in a series of infections linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius.
The case adds to a growing list of international health concerns following the outbreak on the vessel. In the United States, six American citizens who were aboard the ship are currently being monitored across five different states to determine if they have been infected.
The health screenings have extended to transport personnel. Crew members from KLM who had close contact with hantavirus victims have undergone testing and have returned negative results.
As the outbreak draws international attention, efforts have intensified to combat the spread of misinformation regarding the virus. Reports indicate that the situation has triggered a resurgence of old conspiracy theories, with some claiming the outbreak represents a new pandemic or a “mystery virus.” Medical clarifications have been issued to counter these claims, specifying that hantavirus is a known pathogen and is not a new pandemic. Health warnings have explicitly debunked claims that the virus can be cured with zinc.
The monitoring of the six American citizens in the U.S. Remains ongoing.
