Hannover: New Comic Art Exhibitions at Wilhelm Busch Museum – Feuchtenberger & Lust

New exhibitions focusing on the work of internationally acclaimed comic artists Anke Feuchtenberger and Ulli Lust opened Friday at the Wilhelm Busch Museum in Hannover, Germany. The dual exhibition, titled “Ich sehe was, was du nicht siehst!” (I See What You Don’t See!), will run through June 14th.

Feuchtenberger’s contribution features a surreal and often autobiographical visual world, including original drawings from her work “Genossin Kuckuck” (Comrade Cuckoo), which chronicles a childhood in East Germany (DDR) through the period following the fall of the Berlin Wall. The exhibition likewise includes works from the project “Die Hure H.” (The Whore H.), early prints, and an animated short film, according to museum statements.

Alongside Feuchtenberger’s work, the museum is showcasing pieces from Ulli Lust’s autobiographical graphic novels, “Heute ist der letzte Tag vom Rest deines Lebens” (Today is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life) and “Wie ich versuchte ein guter Mensch zu sein” (How I Tried to Be a Good Person). Lust’s most recent comic reportage, “Die Frau als Mensch” (The Woman as a Human Being), which explores early gender roles, is also featured.

A separate exhibition, “Regeln sind zum Brechen da!” (Rules are Made to Be Broken!), geared towards younger visitors, is currently on display in the museum’s guest rooms. The exhibition showcases the work of artist Katharina Greve and focuses on comics that question societal expectations placed on children. This exhibition will remain open until early August.

The museum has also launched a new series, “Busch Meets,” within the Wilhelm Busch Cabinet. The inaugural installment features Austrian artist Michaela Konrad, whose work blends historical comic aesthetics with augmented reality elements in silk-screen posters. This exhibition is scheduled to run until May 17th.

On April 12th, 2026, the museum will host a guided tour, “Vom Busch in die Faust” (From Busch to Faust), connecting the Wilhelm Busch Museum with the nearby Kulturzentrum Faust. The tour will provide insights into the exhibitions of Lust and Feuchtenberger, as well as the history and current work of both cultural institutions. The tour concludes at the Café Warenannahme in the Kulturzentrum Faust.

A Ladies Night event is scheduled for April 23rd, 2026, offering a guided tour and screening of short films, with a focus on the exhibitions featuring the work of Feuchtenberger and Lust. The event, led by art educator Luise Wick and director Ulrike Willberg, will explore themes of body image, societal roles, freedom, memory, and influence. The evening will also include a viewing of selected short films from the “BodyTalk – Blut, Schweiß, Tränen” (BodyTalk – Blood, Sweat, Tears) series directed by Ulrike Willberg.
