Hamilton Tells Piastri: “Don’t Give Up Any places” in Championship Fight
SINGAPORE – Lewis Hamilton offered succinct advice to McLaren‘s Oscar Piastri ahead of the Singapore grand Prix, telling the young australian driver, “Don’t give up any places,” as Piastri battles teammate Lando Norris for the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship.
Hamilton, a seven-time champion himself and veteran of intense intra-team battles – notably with former Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg – was asked if he had guidance for Piastri. he initially joked, “I wouldn’t pass anything on to him!” but then acknowledged Piastri’s prior championship experience.
“Also, you know, it’s not that it’s his first championship that he’s fought for,” Hamilton said. “He’s obviously competed in championships for many years. So there’s not really much that I can say.”
Despite not having spoken directly with Piastri about his mindset, Hamilton ultimately delivered the five-word warning, emphasizing the importance of holding position.
The advice comes as Piastri has conceded positions to Norris in recent races. At the Italian grand Prix, piastri yielded a gained position following a slow pit stop for Norris, despite questioning the team’s decision. Similarly, during the Singapore Grand Prix, Norris overtook Piastri - along with Max Verstappen – while moving into third place, and Piastri again ceded the position, referencing McLaren’s policy against contact.
Hamilton’s counsel underscores the critical nature of every position as the championship battle intensifies, suggesting Piastri cannot afford to relinquish track position if he hopes to challenge for the title.
