Australian Women’s Mental Health Crisis: A Rising Tide of Distress

Report Highlights Depression, Anxiety, and Body Image Issues on the Rise

A new study reveals a concerning surge in mental health challenges among Australian women. The report indicates that a significant portion of women are grappling with depression, anxiety, and body image concerns. This is particularly impacting young women, prompting calls for immediate action.

Alarming Prevalence of Mental Health Issues

The Liptember Foundation, with the George Institute for Global Health, has issued a report revealing troubling mental health trends. The survey of over 7,000 women discovered that 52 percent experience depression, while 44 percent struggle with anxiety. Body image issues affect 39 percent, and 30 percent report insomnia.

“Much of women’s burden, such as caring for others, juggling work and home duties, and struggling to meet impossible beauty standards, are invisible but they still have a significant impact on their psychological wellbeing,”

Professor Bronwyn Graham, Clinical Psychologist and Co-author of the Report

A recent study by the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that 40 percent of women aged 16-85 have experienced a mental disorder in their lifetime (ABS 2023).

Factors and Vulnerable Groups

Low self-esteem, financial pressures, feelings of low self-worth, and sleep deprivation contribute to these mental health concerns. Women with conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, and those in perimenopause or menopause also face heightened psychological distress.

Mental health challenges are on the rise among Australian women.

Young women aged 14-19 are experiencing an increase in body image issues. Reports of self-harm or suicide attempts have also climbed within this demographic. Barriers to accessing care include costs and a reluctance to seek help.
