The ispace Hakuto-R mission captures a stunning lunar Earthrise during a solar eclipse in a photo taken from lunar orbit. The moon’s shadow dances on Earth’s surface in the breathtaking image. Japan’s ispace plans to land the Hakuto-R lander on the moon today, April 25, with the primary landing site at Atlas Crater, located at the outer edge of Mare Frigoris. The spacecraft has been orbiting the moon since its launch in December 2022 atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. You can watch the landing live as the lander performs a braking burn, adjusting its attitude and velocity to make a soft landing on the lunar surface. Elizabeth Howell, co-author of “Why Am I Taller?” a book about space medicine, writes about this incredible lunar Earthrise.
